Aging in Place Upgrades for Two Story California Homes

In Northern California, staying in your home as you age is often the sensible financial choice as well as the emotional one. The challenge is that most homes here have two stories, with the bedrooms upstairs. These are the upgrades that make such a house workable for the long term.

Priority 1, the stairs

Nothing else matters if you cannot reach your bedroom safely.

  • Stair lift. Quick, affordable and suitable for anyone who can sit and stand without difficulty.
  • Home elevator. The lasting solution, usable with a walker or wheelchair and by everyone in the house.
  • Downstairs bedroom suite. An alternative where there is space to convert, though it involves a larger remodel.

Priority 2, the bathroom

  • Replace the tub with a curbless shower
  • Add blocking in the walls and install grab bars
  • Fit a comfort-height toilet and a hand-held shower

Priority 3, the entry

  • Create one step-free entrance, often through the garage
  • Add a platform lift where steps cannot be avoided
  • Improve lighting and add a covered spot to set things down

Priority 4, everyday ease

  • Lever door handles and rocker switches
  • Pull-out shelves and drawers in the kitchen
  • Better lighting on stairs and in halls
  • Slip-resistant flooring

Doing it in stages

You need not do everything at once. Start with safety, namely the stairs, the bathroom and the lighting. Fold larger items into the next remodel. If you are opening walls for any reason, add grab bar blocking and consider framing space for a future elevator.

Who can help

An occupational therapist can assess your needs. A contractor experienced in accessibility work can handle the building. We advise on and install the lifts and elevators.
